Headphones and In-Ears: technology and comfort

In recent years, our world has become increasingly mobile. Those who are often on the go like to use headphones in public—whether for their favourite music, phone calls, or audiobooks. However, not only when travelling but also in times of new workplace models, it is becoming increasingly important to have headphones available for professional use. This is why all types of headphones are also particularly popular as gifts.

Over time more and more terms related to headphones have emerged, which not everyone may be familiar with. We also use common terminology on our website and would like to provide a brief overview of what it all means.

The First Decision: Headset or In-Ear

The first decision when choosing headphones is simple but fundamental. Do I need over-ear headphones (a headset) or in-ear headphones? Over-ear headphones can physically shield better from the surrounding environment. The choice depends on whether the padding sits “on the ear” or “around the ear.” On-ear headphones are usually lighter than over-ear models but may not offer the same sound quality. A headband can limit movement, but it provides a secure fit. Some headphones are foldable for easier transport, which can be very useful.

Earbuds, whether wired or wireless, are often lighter and allow for more freedom of movement. They are easy to transport and fit directly in the ear, but they can also be lost more easily. They are usually more practical for sports. We cannot make a recommendation for one option over the other—it is more a matter of personal preference and depends largely on the intended use of the headphones.

Wired – Wireless – True Wireless

It is clear to customers what a wired headphone is. However, we have noticed that many of our customers do not know the difference between “wireless” and “true wireless” headphones. Once you know, the distinction is simple. Wireless headphones are not connected to the audio source by a cable, but the two earpieces are still connected to each other by a wire. In contrast, “true wireless” headphones consist of two separate earpieces. This means that there are no true wireless over-ear headphones, as they are always connected via the headband.

Shutting Out the Outside World: (Active) Noise Cancelling

In today’s noisy world, creating our own quiet zones has become increasingly important. This is where noise cancelling, often abbreviated as NC or ANC (Active Noise Cancelling), comes into play. The letter “A” in ANC signifies an important distinction—whether the noise cancellation is active or not. Passive noise reduction occurs physically, such as with over-ear cups that cover the entire ear. Logically, a headphone that encloses the ear will block out external noise to some extent.

Active noise cancelling, however, works through technology. An ANC headphone captures external sounds and “filters” them out by producing counteracting sound waves. Manufacturers specify noise reduction in decibels—if a headphone has active noise cancelling up to 20 decibels, it can only filter out ambient noise up to that level.

Charging Times, Battery Life, and Charging Cases

Wired headphones are usually powered directly through the cable. However, all wireless headphones still require power. Every Bluetooth headphone has an integrated battery that is either charged via cable or, more recently, in so-called charging cases. These function like a power bank: they are pre-charged and then supply power to the headphones when they are placed inside.

For many in-ear models, we specify the charging time of the case, how often a fully charged case can recharge the headphones, and how fast this process is. We also try to indicate the battery life of all headphones per charge. This is always based on the assumption that the headphones are used at (almost) full volume, meaning actual usage time may vary depending on conditions.

Headphones as a Gift

The great thing about our headphones is that there is something for every budget. Naturally, the more comfort and technical innovation a headphone offers, the higher the price. Small wired earbuds are available for little money, whereas models with ANC, high-performance charging cases, or branded items from manufacturers such as Blaupunkt or Philips come at a higher price.

This means that we offer a great selection for every target group and budget. Earbuds with your logo, branded headsets, or even in-ears with a light-up logo that illuminates when in use—there are many possibilities. Order headsets for your employees in the office or home office, earbuds for your gym clients, or high-quality in-ears with a charging case for your top suppliers.
